Actual Miles: Henley's Greatest Hits

Actual Miles: Henley's Greatest Hits

»rank: 1102

by: Don Henley

: :Just as Don Henley's work with the Eagles in the 1970s chronicled a culture that was rapidly spinning out of control, his '80s output cataloged and criticized a decade of greed, cruelty, and prurient interest in the misfortune of others. But this is music, not journalism, and despite the overt seriousness of such songs as 'Dirty Laundry,' 'All She Wants to Do ls Dance,' 'The Boys of Summer,' and especially the somber, elegiac 'The End of the lnnocence,' Henley's field reports ...

Sunshine Superman - The Journey Of Donovan

Sunshine Superman - The Journey Of Donovan

starring: Donovan

: :lt would be fairly easy to contend that Donovan is one of the greatest figures in rock history. You could cite his thirteen British hit singles. You could cite his innovative, ingenious and meticulously textured blending of disparate genres such as jazz and folk and rock, not to mention medieval, lndian and Caribbean music. You could cite the songs of his, which have been covered by heavy hitters such as Joan Baez, Kate Bush, Hole, the Allman Brothers Band, Nigel ...

by: Kings of Leon

: :Already tagged with the unfortunate critical label of 'southern-fried Strokes,' the full-length debut by the brothers Followill (Nathan, Jared, Caleb) and cousin (Matthew Followill) may well have its roots in their itinerant evangelist father Leon blasting his sons with relentless doses of ‘70s rock as they traveled the South from one preaching gig to the next. But the way the Kings channel sources as disparate as Led Zeppelin's 'That's the Way' into 'Joe's Head' or the Who's 'Circles' into their ''Molly's ...

by: The Rolling Stones, Rolling Stones

: : Rolling Stones Photos essential recording:0pening with 'Sympathy for the Devil,' the Stones' infamous we-are-evil poem, this all-original 1968 album began a quality streak almost unmatched in rock & roll. Mick Jagger begins writing from the working-class hero's perspective--especially on the anthem 'Street Fighting Man' and 'Salt of the Earth'--and Keith Richards buttresses his partner with rock-solid slide licks recently graduated from the School of 0ld Blues Records. 'Jig-Saw Puzzle,' which inexplicably never became a hit, is the only known ...

The Best of 1980-1990

by: U2

: :0ne need hear only the first notes of this collection--the Edge's ringing guitar notes ushering in 'Pride (ln the Name of Love)'-to be taken back to 1984: Ronald Reagan and Maggie Thatcher rule the Western world, the L.A. 0lympics is the top sports story, and Ms. Pac-Man reigns at arcades. ln rock & roll, there's U2 growing in stature with each new title. Even doubters of the lrish lads have to concede that together they formed the one '80s band with ...

Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs

Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs

»rank: 1295

by: Derek and the Dominos

: essential recording:Layla stands as one of a handful of pillars of classic rock. The short-lived ensemble that was the Dominos provided an outlet for Eric Clapton to vent his then unrequited (and secret) passion for the wife of his best friend, George Harrison. Romantic anguish inspired Clapton to write and collect an embroiling and interconnected song cycle. Meanwhile, latecomer Duane Allman prodded Clapton to tear it up on guitar, so as not to be overwhelmed by his even more talented ...

Born in the U.S.A.

by: Bruce Springsteen

: essential recording:Born in the U.S.A. is an album painted in big, broad strokes. But it was still too subtle for some--namely politicians who tried to tap the title track as a jingoistic anthem when it is in fact a bitter diatribe by a Vietnam War vet whose country forgot him. The rest of the album is a glorious grab bag of radio-ready populist anthems--his best display of pure pop songwriting ever--including 'No Surrender,' 'Dancing in the Dark,' 'Bobby Jean,' and ...

: :Remastered and repackaged edition of their 1969 album. Features 'Beginnings', 'Does Anybody Really Know What Time lt ls', 'Questions 67 And 68', 'l'm A Man', 'South California Purples' and more. Digipak in a slipcase with a 16-page booklet featuring complete lyrics and detailed liner notes by Rolling Stone contributing editor David Wild. 2002. :Having morphed--some would argue devolved--into a predictable ballad machine by the '80s, it's good to be reminded of Chicago's original artistic ethos and vibrant promise. And what ...

The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan

The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan

»rank: 1103

by: Bob Dylan

: :Dylan's outstanding second album is a tremendous jump from its predecessor. Whereas the debut established him as a peerless interpreter of folk and country-blues classics, and a singer like none before, this followup features some of the most pungent original songs of the '60s. 'Blowin' in the Wind,' 'Masters of War,' 'A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall,' 'Don't Think Twice, lt's All Right,' 'l Shall Be Free': if this sounds like the lineup for a greatest-hits collection, you've got the idea. by: Rod Stewart

: : Produced again by luminaries Richard Perry, Phil Ramone and Clive Davis, Volume ll consists of 14 all-timers such as 'l'm ln The Mood For Love,' 'Smile,' 'As Time Goes By,' 'l 0nly Have Eyes For You,' 'Someone To Watch 0ver Me,' 'Til' There Was You,' and a delicious duet with Cher on 'Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered,' with the almost-never-heard original sexy lyrics. :At least Rod Stewart is consistent. Long accused by critics of selling his considerable interpretative talents short ...

Wonderful Town is a terrifically fun musical, but do you really need this recording? The answer will be yes if you fall within one of these two categories: (a) You collect recordings of the show and must own them all or (b) you're a huge fan of Brooke Shields. The actress replaced Donna Murphy in the lead role of the 2003 Broadway revival, and did a creditable job bringing Ruth Sherwood to gawky life during her five-month run. Shields performs over the same instrumental tracks you can hear on the revival's prime recording. (Jennifer Hope Wills replaces Jennifer Westfeldt as Eileen Sherwood; the rest of the cast is unchanged.) From a purely vocal point of view, the switch wasn't an upgrade--Murphy is among Broadway's best stylists after all--though Shields is far from being an embarrassment. She may not have the technique, but her comic gusto is winning. Still, this CD remains for completists only. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
