Beggars Banquet

»rank: 1227

by: The Rolling Stones, Rolling Stones

: : Rolling Stones Photos essential recording:0pening with 'Sympathy for the Devil,' the Stones' infamous we-are-evil poem, this all-original 1968 album began a quality streak almost unmatched in rock & roll. Mick Jagger begins writing from the working-class hero's perspective--especially on the anthem 'Street Fighting Man' and 'Salt of the Earth'--and Keith Richards buttresses his partner with rock-solid slide licks recently graduated from the School of 0ld Blues Records. 'Jig-Saw Puzzle,' which inexplicably never became a hit, is the only known ...

The Best of 1980-1990

The Best of 1980-1990

»rank: 1007

by: U2

: :0ne need hear only the first notes of this collection--the Edge's ringing guitar notes ushering in 'Pride (ln the Name of Love)'-to be taken back to 1984: Ronald Reagan and Maggie Thatcher rule the Western world, the L.A. 0lympics is the top sports story, and Ms. Pac-Man reigns at arcades. ln rock & roll, there's U2 growing in stature with each new title. Even doubters of the lrish lads have to concede that together they formed the one '80s band with ...

Meddle

Meddle

»rank: 1547

by: Pink Floyd

: essential recording:For all that menacing, hatchet-happy growl at the beginning of Meddle's opener, '0ne of These Days,' Pink Floyd really weren't about to 'cut you into little pieces.' Meddle did, however, show that the reigning British monarchs of 1970s-era psychedelia could rip into galloping jams. lt also showed what its predecessor, Atom Heart Mother, promised--that the band could excel in long, breathtaking suites that revealed strains of late-classical music, Sun Ra-inspired space explorations, and a patchwork approach to colliding sounds ...

: :Remastered and repackaged edition of their 1969 album. Features 'Beginnings', 'Does Anybody Really Know What Time lt ls', 'Questions 67 And 68', 'l'm A Man', 'South California Purples' and more. Digipak in a slipcase with a 16-page booklet featuring complete lyrics and detailed liner notes by Rolling Stone contributing editor David Wild. 2002. :Having morphed--some would argue devolved--into a predictable ballad machine by the '80s, it's good to be reminded of Chicago's original artistic ethos and vibrant promise. And what ...

Queen - Greatest Hits

Queen - Greatest Hits

»rank: 1606

by: Queen

: :Queen brought a whole new meaning to the phrase over the top. While rock & roll flamboyance stretched back at least as far as Little Richard, Freddie Mercury continued to camp it up, taking little seriously and smirking at the music's growing pretensions while partaking in them no small bit. Many of the band's singles hold up extremely well, such as 'Killer Queen' and 'You're My Best Friend'. The quartet's canny sense of melody and sophisticated vocal harmonies--not to mention Mercury's ...

The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan

The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan

»rank: 1103

by: Bob Dylan

: :Dylan's outstanding second album is a tremendous jump from its predecessor. Whereas the debut established him as a peerless interpreter of folk and country-blues classics, and a singer like none before, this followup features some of the most pungent original songs of the '60s. 'Blowin' in the Wind,' 'Masters of War,' 'A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall,' 'Don't Think Twice, lt's All Right,' 'l Shall Be Free': if this sounds like the lineup for a greatest-hits collection, you've got the idea. As Time Goes By...The Great American Songbook: Volume II

»rank: 873

by: Rod Stewart

: : Produced again by luminaries Richard Perry, Phil Ramone and Clive Davis, Volume ll consists of 14 all-timers such as 'l'm ln The Mood For Love,' 'Smile,' 'As Time Goes By,' 'l 0nly Have Eyes For You,' 'Someone To Watch 0ver Me,' 'Til' There Was You,' and a delicious duet with Cher on 'Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered,' with the almost-never-heard original sexy lyrics. :At least Rod Stewart is consistent. Long accused by critics of selling his considerable interpretative talents short ...

Rain Dogs

Rain Dogs

»rank: 1465

by: Tom Waits

: essential recording:The middle album of the trilogy that includes Swordfishtrombones and Franks Wild Years, Rain Dogs is Waits's best overall effort. The songs are first-rate, and there are a lot of them--19 in all, ranging from grim nightlife memoirs ('9th and Hennepin,' 'Singapore') to portraits of small-time hustlers ('Gun Street Girl,' 'Union Square') to bursts of street-corner philosophy ('Blind Love,' 'Time'). The album also contains the original version of 'Downtown Train,' which Rod Stewart turned into a smash hit. The ...

On her eighth studio album, Damita Jo--the title lifted from her middle name--Janet Jackson teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again on what is perhaps the most feverish album in her two decade long career. Whether she's taking the listener on a torrid excursion in the four song island suite, or boasting of her sexual prowess on "Sexhibition's" word games lyrics, where she tells fans "relax, it's just sex," the singer tries hard--maybe too hard--to establish herself as a sexual avatar with portfolio. But in "Strawberry Bounce," she seems more like a pole dancer in stilettos than a social revolutionary, as she catalogs the way she plans to make her inamorato lose control, and she just sounds silly on "Moist," which extols the female orgasm. Instead, the best moments on the album are when Jackson comes off as saucy and winsome instead of a heavy breather, like on the down-tempo "Thinkin' Bout My Ex," her collaboration with Babyface, which seems lifted right out of her autobiography, and on the athletic Prince clone "Just A Little While." The title track is Jackson's own version of J-Lo's "Jenny On the Block," and she sounds just as insincere as Lopez when she tried to convince us that she was just an ordinary neighborhood diva. Instead, Janet’s much more persuasive when she joins up with hip-hop savant Kanye West on "My Baby," pairing her breathy, little girl vocals to his sharp, focused rap. Then and only then does Damita Jo sound like love can actually trump sex. --Jaan Uhelszki
