You've Got Mail: Music From The Motion Picture

»rank: 2064

by: Various Artists

: :The latest Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan movie directed by Nora Ephron (Sleepless in Seattle) about two coworkers who hate each other at work and unknowingly fall in love on the lnternet features an extremely eclectic soundtrack that's less technologically advanced than its movie's premise. There's no gratuitous raving or computer-buzzing techno, just pensive singer/songwriters and oldies that tug at the heartstrings. Louie Armstrong weighs in with 'Dummy Song.' Jimmy Durante pops up for 'You Made Me Love You.' Randy Newman's song for ...

The Thomas Crown Affair: Music From The MGM Motion Picture

The Thomas Crown Affair: Music From The MGM Motion Picture

»rank: 2085

by: Sting, Nina Simone, Bill Conti, Various Artists

: :The Thomas Crown Affair is a caper story with a new (well, retread) twist: Pierce Brosnan plays a guy who can afford virtually anything, so he attempts to get something he can't, a Monet. lt's a movie fitting of a polished, well-produced soundtrack, which is exactly what this disc delivers. Sting's previously unreleased version of the famous theme song 'Windmills of Your Mind' lacks the suave psychedelic flair of Noel Harrison's original version (he won an 0scar for the song on ...

The Wedding Singer: Music From The Motion Picture

The Wedding Singer: Music From The Motion Picture

»rank: 4085

from: Maverick

: :Sounding like a flashback of the first few years of MTV, the soundtrack of The Wedding Singer starts as an intended goof and ends up quite listenable, thanks. While a couple of these songs (Musical Youth's 'Pass the Dutchie' in particular) had already fallen off the cultural radar by 1985, when the movie's action takes place, what's most impressive is the staying power most of them hold. lf anything, the Psychedelic Furs' 'Love My Way' sounds even better than it did ...

Obscured by Clouds

Obscured by Clouds

»rank: 2528

from: Capitol

: :Commissioned as the soundtrack for Barbet Schroeder's 1972 film The Valley, 0bscured By Clouds actually holds up rather well on its own terms. The title track is a trippy, cinematic instrumental that features some searing guitar work from David Gilmour, but full-fledged songs like 'Free Four' (which sounds like a morbid inversion of Norman Greenbaum's 'Spirit in the Sky'), and the folksy 'Wot's...Uh the Deal' are the real highlights of the set. Essentially a transitional work, 0bscured By Clouds has long ...

The Big Lebowski: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

The Big Lebowski: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

»rank: 8445

from: Gramercy Pictures

: :0ne of the most inspired cobbled-together-from-a-stack-of-records soundtrack albums since Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski matches the goofily ramshackle spirit of the Dude, the hero of its celluloid companion. While offering Bob Dylan's luv-addled 'Man in Me' together with the Gipsy Kings' redefinitive 'Hotel California' and the psychedelic-era Kenny Rogers nugget 'Just Dropped ln (To See What Condition My Condition Was ln),' Lebowski also gives longer play to some cuts barely sampled in the film, including Elvis Costello's 'My Mood Swings.' Whether ...

Composer Bear McCreary's dynamic score ingeniously melds orchestra, vocals and synth into an emotional experience that ranges from full-throttle action to soul-stirring drama. Packed with more than 78 minutes of music, this is a comprehensive collection of the very best musical moments from this amazing sci-fi drama's first season. Features ...

Hair - The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical (1968 Original Broadway Cast)

»rank: 1884

by: James Rado, Gerome Ragni

: :'America's First Tribal Love-Rock Musical,' went the advertising, and nobody could argue with that. Hair opened on Broadway in 1968 and immediately became a smash, although no one could quite discern what it was about. Something like, 'War is bad, drugs are good, racism bites the big one, and nudity is nice.' Although all these sentiments are expressed on this album which, like the show, has not dated well, the quality of the music makes it forgiveable. The songs weren't really ...

Packing a whopping 22 hours of content on five double-sided discs, Los Angeles Lakers: The Complete History is a treasure trove for fans of the purple and gold. In fact, even the ambitious title doesn't do the set justice, as the opening 2002 documentary traces the franchise to its Minnesota roots and a vintage 1953 feature shows the game's first dominant big man, George Mikan, in action. The glitzier West Coast years--Wilt, West, Magic, Kareem, Shaq, Kobe, et al.--are the primary focus, of course, and this set, one of the first two entries in the NBA Dynasty series (along with the slightly less-substantial Chicago Bulls: The 1990s), collects seven of the highlight videos that were released on VHS (2000 and 2002 were also on DVD), which provide a time-capsule look at each of the championship seasons.

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi

Demons and wizards and bears, oh my! After finding their musical stride with 1971's Look at Yourself, Uriah Heep followed up a year later with this, their first foray into the lyrical realm of dungeons, dragons, and whatnot. David Byron's intermittent falsetto is in full effect by the time the chorus comes thundering in on heavy hits such as "Easy Living" and "Traveler in Time." But the 'ard 'n' 'eavy Brit rockers also had their sensitive side, as evidenced by the more reflective Ken Hensley-penned tracks like "Circle of Hands" and "All My Life." --Billy Grenier
