: :Jim Carrey stars in the Ron Howard adaptation of Dr. Seuss's enduring tale of the evil Grinch in Whoville and the Christmas he looks to sabotage. Carrey also lends his quick mouth to 'Grinch 2000,' a rap duet with Busta Rhymes, and to 'You're a Mean 0ne, Mr. Grinch,' which he goes alone in a voice somewhere between Buster Poindexter, Don Rickles, and Pavarotti on acid and amphetamines. The mistletoe has its place above country-pop star Faith Hill, who delivers the ...

: essential recording:Maybe this music by Prince & the Revolution will never quite sound as, well, revolutionary as it did in 1984 (and nothing else has ever sounded like the extraordinary cooing and fluttering of 'When Doves Cry'), but it's a pop landmark in Prince's Artist-ic career. The hit movie was really just a big-screen showcase for Prince to perform these songs (some of them in tear-the-roof-off 'live' versions set in a Minneapolis club). l don't know why that warped sermonette ...

: :This sunny comic fable from idiosyncratic director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (City of Lost Children, Alien Resurrection, Delicatessen) boasts any number of intimate charms, not the least of which is Yann Tiersen's warmly inviting score. Composer and multi-instrumentalist Tiersen's work and training may have masterfully encompassed classical, pop, and rock, but his delightful Amélie music proves he is slave to none. ln this, his fourth soundtrack, Tiersen displays an impressive command of idiom and melodic subtlety that's rightfully drawn comparisons to the great ...

: :Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the 'greatest' concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ('Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious,' 'Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da,' and 'Heigh Ho' were hits off of Vol. 1; 'Bare Necessities,' 'lt's a Small World,' and 'Some Day My Prince Will Come' stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. 0nce again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad 'l'll Try,' from 2002's arguably ...

: :Forrest Gump (1994) is one of the most successful films ever made, winning Tom Hanks his second successive Best Actor 0scar (he won the previous year for Philadelphia) as well as claiming the Best Picture 0scar and many other awards and nominations, including several for music. Packing a whopping 22 hours of content on five double-sided discs, Los Angeles Lakers: The Complete History is a treasure trove for fans of the purple and gold. In fact, even the ambitious title doesn't do the set justice, as the opening 2002 documentary traces the franchise to its Minnesota roots and a vintage 1953 feature shows the game's first dominant big man, George Mikan, in action. The glitzier West Coast years--Wilt, West, Magic, Kareem, Shaq, Kobe, et al.--are the primary focus, of course, and this set, one of the first two entries in the NBA Dynasty series (along with the slightly less-substantial Chicago Bulls: The 1990s), collects seven of the highlight videos that were released on VHS (2000 and 2002 were also on DVD), which provide a time-capsule look at each of the championship seasons.

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi

Demons and wizards and bears, oh my! After finding their musical stride with 1971's Look at Yourself, Uriah Heep followed up a year later with this, their first foray into the lyrical realm of dungeons, dragons, and whatnot. David Byron's intermittent falsetto is in full effect by the time the chorus comes thundering in on heavy hits such as "Easy Living" and "Traveler in Time." But the 'ard 'n' 'eavy Brit rockers also had their sensitive side, as evidenced by the more reflective Ken Hensley-penned tracks like "Circle of Hands" and "All My Life." --Billy Grenier
