The Very Best of the Spinners

The Very Best of the Spinners

by: The Spinners

: :Although their first album appeared in the early '60s, it was with 1975's 'They Just Can't Stop lt (Games People Play)' that the Spinners really got moving. They emerged as one of the poppiest of the '70s soul bands, which cost them dearly in credibility. But their best songs were stunning--and by the time original vocalist Philippe Wynne left the group, in 1977, they'd racked up enough successes to stuff a greatest-hits package from top to bottom. Atlantic's 1978 'Best of ...

James Brown - 20 All-Time Greatest Hits!

»rank: 1282

by: James Brown

: :A towering figure in postwar American music, for over 40 years James Brown has written, produced, and performed some of the most compelling R&B ever recorded. 20 All Time Greatest Hits! distills Startime!, itself a four-CD set that barely scratched the surface of Brown's prodigious output. As such, this collection concentrates on Brown's best-known records: 'l Feel Good,' 'Papa's Got a Brand New Bag,' and 'Cold Sweat.' The propulsive one- or two-chord vamps with Brown's hoarse, declamatory vocals laid the groundwork ...

by: Michael Jackson

: essential recording:Given the pace of Michael Jackson's post-Thriller release schedule, it's striking that 0ff the Wall appeared between two albums with his brothers, Destiny (1978) and Triumph (1980), on which the twentysomething phenomenon was also fully engaged. Aided by richly detailed but not overdone production, 0ff the Wall redefined how much Michael might do. Tracks like 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough,' 'Rock with You,' the title cut (all Top 10 singles), and 'Burn this Disco 0ut' not only consolidated ...

: :Their remake of 'Killing Me Softly' was the hit, but that's only the beginning of the story. A hip-hop trio whose talents reach out into the world of the pop song (Wyclef Jean is a fine guitar player, and Lauryn Hill's a heck of a singer), the Fugees are also all distinctive, inventive rappers--you find yourself waiting for each of them to take the next verse in turn. The beats are the familiar crossed-armed boom-bip, but the group's understated grooves and ...

Life After Death

Life After Death

»rank: 2876

by: The Notorious B.I.G.

: essential recording:The King of Brooklyn, Biggie Smalls, busted through with an instant hip-hop classic on his first album, Ready to Die, but he outdid even his standard on Life After Death, an audible, posthumous autobiography about the life of the former dope dealer. The 2 CD set revels in death, especially on 'Niggaz Bleed,' 'Somebody's Gotta Die,' and 'You're Nobody ('Til Somebody Kills You),' but it's painfully clear that this chestnut-cheeked, fun-loving father of two wanted to see his kids ...

On her eighth studio album, Damita Jo--the title lifted from her middle name--Janet Jackson teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again on what is perhaps the most feverish album in her two decade long career. Whether she's taking the listener on a torrid excursion in the four song island suite, or boasting of her sexual prowess on "Sexhibition's" word games lyrics, where she tells fans "relax, it's just sex," the singer tries hard--maybe too hard--to establish herself as a sexual avatar with portfolio. But in "Strawberry Bounce," she seems more like a pole dancer in stilettos than a social revolutionary, as she catalogs the way she plans to make her inamorato lose control, and she just sounds silly on "Moist," which extols the female orgasm. Instead, the best moments on the album are when Jackson comes off as saucy and winsome instead of a heavy breather, like on the down-tempo "Thinkin' Bout My Ex," her collaboration with Babyface, which seems lifted right out of her autobiography, and on the athletic Prince clone "Just A Little While." The title track is Jackson's own version of J-Lo's "Jenny On the Block," and she sounds just as insincere as Lopez when she tried to convince us that she was just an ordinary neighborhood diva. Instead, Janet’s much more persuasive when she joins up with hip-hop savant Kanye West on "My Baby," pairing her breathy, little girl vocals to his sharp, focused rap. Then and only then does Damita Jo sound like love can actually trump sex. --Jaan Uhelszki
