A Very Special Christmas - Vol. 5»rank: 1670by: Macy Gray, Wyclef Jean
: :Five volumes in 14 years would probably qualify these all-star benefit albums (Special 0lympics) as a holiday tradition by now, even if all five have been hit-and-miss affairs. Still, the 2001 edition has a few more highlights than a quick glance at its offerings might indicate. Jon Bon Jovi tries to imitate Elvis on 'Blue Christmas,' and Darlene Love--surely as important a voice in the genre as Bing Crosby--falls short in her attempt to recreate her superior 1963 Phil Spector version ... |

The Ultimate Collection»rank: 4045by: Michael McDonald
: :0ne of the most immediately recognizable voices in all of contemporary music, Michael McDonald's signature sound fuses rock, R&B, soul, and gospel. As he evolved onward from his formative days as a backup singer for Steely Dan, McDonald's artistry bridged the gap between jazzy blue-eyed soul and and chart-topping pop rock, earning him superstardom both as lead vocalist/keyboardist for the Doobie Brothers and as a solo artist. Spanning 1976 to the present, this hit-packed new compilation spotlights his inimitable baritone ... |

The Best of the Stylistics»rank: 2129by: The Stylistics
: :This is an early collection that gathers the group's hits up to 1975. While they continued to make the charts (albeit sporadically) for another decade, the Stylistics' golden years had drawn to a close by the time this record hit the stands, so almost all of their key tracks are here. Best of the Stylistics Vol. 2 and All-Time Classics cover different bases, while Greatest Love Hits is a theme compilation with some overlap. Yet another compilation, Very Best of the ... |

Definitive Greatest Hits»rank: 2509by: Al Green
: : essential recording 0ne of the must-own soul albums, Greatest Hits is fattened with extra tracks in this reissue for a total of 21 songs. Al Green brought the Memphis Sound into the '70s by slightly softening it, melding smooth funkiness with his miraculous voice and innate sensitivity: his love songs, while perfect for the bedroom, are as conversational as they are blatantly seductive. By adding the likes of 'Belle,' a 1977 single that's a near-goodbye to the pop life, ... |

Kirk Franklin and the Family Christmas»rank: 2002by: Kirk Franklin and the Family
: :Anyone who's seen Kirk Franklin live knows that he's a powerful entertainer and an animated gospel singer who brings the church and the word with him wherever he goes. Christmas is Franklin's testament to faith and a showcase for some of the finest gospel singers in the Family as they soar through standards such as 'Silent Night' and 'Go Tell lt 0n The Mountain,' along with less familiar fare such as 'Now Behold the Lamb' and 'They Need To Know Him.' ... |

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi
