: :\N :Reunited with producer Rick Rubin and guitarist John Frusciante (both of whom were on board for the 1991's breakthrough Blood Sugar Sex Magik), the Chili Peppers waste no time in burying their last effort, the so-so 0ne Hot Minute. Californication's kickoff cut, 'Around the World,' swaggers around the room, reacquainting itself with old fans and welcoming new ones. Fuzzy Hendrix vibes and popcorn bass lines still rule the roost, along with a heaping helping of disco magic and some ...

: essential recording:This is Etta James's first full-length album, recorded for Chess Records' Argo subsidiary in 1960. lt taps all aspects of her then-blossoming talent. There's the crooning rock ballad 'My Dearest Darling' and the elegantly symphonic 'Sunday Kind of Love.' Her classic, brokenhearted 'All l Could Do Was Cry' follows the sweet title track and the bawdy blues stomper 'l Just Want to Make Love to You.' And there's a version of Harold Arlen's 'Stormy Weather,' which Lena Horne made ...

: :Now we have Greatest Hits, a 22-song collection of Cooke's pop hits in addition to the 13-song Best 0f collection and the 28-song The Man and His Music. 0nly The Man comes close to presenting a complete portrait of the legendary soul singer: At least there are examples of Cooke's gospel and R&B material. (Any collection without 'A Change is Gonna Come' is an automatic failure.) Cooke's melodious voice and deft songwriting touch are worthy of more than a single-disc compilation. ...

: : Born to be mild? Amos Lee's sophomore effort for Blue Note follows firmly in the gentle guitar strums of his well-received 2005 debut and opening slots for Norah Jones and Bob Dylan. Little has changed the second time around, which will come as a relief to those enthralled by his first release. He remains a sensitive sort, mixing his insightful, reflective lyrics with lovely, unforced melodies played by backing musicians that stay on low boil. These tunes go down as ...

: :Universal Motown's multi-platinum-selling, Grammy awardwinning singer/songwriter/actress Erykah Badu returns to the music scene with her new album 'New Amerykah' featuring the debut single 'Honey'. Laced with Erykah's bluesy grit and MC style vocals, the song is bolstered by producer's 9th Wonder's razor sharp hip hop beats. Badu describes the song as 'an old school track with some funk on it.' The release of 'Honey' on November 20th also marks Badu's 10th year in the music industry. To celebrate, the gifted ...

The St. Louis rapper has sold 30 million albums to date -- and he's approaching his upcoming release with renewed intensity. Beyonce's London fans go crazy when the Destiny's Child beauty, on her first solo international tour, descends to a massive stage while suspended, upside down, from a wire. After a delicate landing, the star embarks on a set of recent hits immersed in complicated arrangements, including the Arabic sound of "Baby Boy" and "Naughty Girl," the chunky, hypnotic funk of "Hip Hop Star," and Beyonce: Live at Wembley's best performance, the powerful "Work It Out," in which the diva is at her clearest, jazziest, and most soulful. Not everything works. The bottom falls out of "Gift from Virgo," "Be with You" is forgettable, and Beyonce's stage patter needs polish. But a Destiny's Child medley accompanied by only a DJ is innovative and fun, "Summertime" proves a breezy dance number, and "Crazy in Love" is bolstered by what sounds like the old Stax horns. A CD featuring a few remixes is included with the DVD. --Tom Keogh
