: :New 0rleans Christmas captures the unique and vibrant voice of this city with a collection of holiday favorites decked in the blues, jazz and swing flavors the Crescent City is famous for. The album opens with a familiar favorite as Big Al Carson and Academy Award-winning Lars Edegran put a big band twist on Santa Claus is Coming to Town. Home-town favorite James Andrews summons up the spirit of New 0rleans Christmas past, as the gravelly tones of his voice ...

by: Thievery Corporation

: :2000 release for the extremely talented and unsung DJ duo. An amalgamation of reggae dubplates, lounge muzak, breaks, beats and bossanova. 2000 release. Standard jewel case with slipcase. :Washington, D.C.'s Thievery Corporation purvey a very mellow, deliberately international mixture of sounds that might be called 'lounge music'--not in the kitschy sense, but in the sense of a laid-back local bar (much like the one the duo happens to run) with no dance floor. Rob Garza and Eric Hilton are professed ...

: :Live and Swingin’ is undoubtedly for those who already own some of the guys’ worthier recordings. 0h, but the guys? Frank, Dean, and Sammy (or, as Jackie Mason had it on The Simpsons, 'the Candy Man!') For most anyone who cares, though, this is a must-buy item: a slightly edited version of the 1962 Villa Venice tapes along with a DVD that preserves a rarely seen, full-length serious/funny/anarchic Rat Pack performance from ’65. (For sentimentalists’ sake, it was taped on Tina ...

Plays the Music of Mickey Katz

Plays the Music of Mickey Katz

by: Don Byron

: essential recording:There's a strong connection between Don Byron's humor and his profound musical curiosity, two qualities that distinguish him from his more conservative contemporaries. Both are much to the fore in this faithful tribute to Mickey Katz, a witty and innovative clarinetist who brought virtuosity and a compulsive comedy to the klezmer tradition, both with Spike Jones in the '40s and later on his own. Byron's interest in klezmer was hardly faddish when he recorded this 1993 date. His involvement ...

: :Dave Brubeck's moving liner notes to this 14-number assortment of solo jazz piano works are almost as good as his impressions of the standards and lesser-know Christmas music. Mixing jazz playing with classical flourishes and splashes of blues, Brubeck deftly expands the sound of Christmas. You'll never hear a 'Silent Night' like Brubeck's as the glistening introduction leads to a powerful meditation on the melody. And for sheer fun, there are his swinging opening numbers, ''Homecoming' Jingle Bells' and 'Santa Claus ...

On her eighth studio album, Damita Jo--the title lifted from her middle name--Janet Jackson teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again on what is perhaps the most feverish album in her two decade long career. Whether she's taking the listener on a torrid excursion in the four song island suite, or boasting of her sexual prowess on "Sexhibition's" word games lyrics, where she tells fans "relax, it's just sex," the singer tries hard--maybe too hard--to establish herself as a sexual avatar with portfolio. But in "Strawberry Bounce," she seems more like a pole dancer in stilettos than a social revolutionary, as she catalogs the way she plans to make her inamorato lose control, and she just sounds silly on "Moist," which extols the female orgasm. Instead, the best moments on the album are when Jackson comes off as saucy and winsome instead of a heavy breather, like on the down-tempo "Thinkin' Bout My Ex," her collaboration with Babyface, which seems lifted right out of her autobiography, and on the athletic Prince clone "Just A Little While." The title track is Jackson's own version of J-Lo's "Jenny On the Block," and she sounds just as insincere as Lopez when she tried to convince us that she was just an ordinary neighborhood diva. Instead, Janet’s much more persuasive when she joins up with hip-hop savant Kanye West on "My Baby," pairing her breathy, little girl vocals to his sharp, focused rap. Then and only then does Damita Jo sound like love can actually trump sex. --Jaan Uhelszki
