Art of Motion»rank: 2312by: Andy McKee
: :ln my humble opinion, Andy is the most innovative and exciting fingerstyle guitarist to emerge in years. Still in his 20's, Andy has developed a mastery of the 6-string guitar and the harp guitar that leaves me speechless. He is the most textural player of the instrument since Michael Hedges, and he creates sonic architecture worthy of the great modern composers for any instrument. - Don Ross |

January»rank: 1894by: Marcin Wasilewski Trio
: :A mature statement by a still-young Polish band that already has 15 years of playing experience behind it. All group members shine here, withMarcin Wasilewski again impressive as one of the most outstanding jazz pianists of his generation. The group has already a strong and still-growingfollowing both in their own right and as members of the Tomasz Stanko Quartet. (Additionally, profiles of pianist Wasilewski and bassist Kurkiewicz have been raised by their membership of the Manu Katché Group). Remarkably broad ... |

Ivey-Divey»rank: 1406by: Don Byron
: :Don Byron digs into a Lester Young classic and much more on lvey-Divey, the follow up to the critically acclaimed You Are #6. Centered around Byron's effervescent new trio with piano rising star Jason Moran and drumming paragon Jack DeJohnette, lvey-Divey is a master class in jazz chemistry-a worthy successor in spirit to tenor sax legend Young's mid-'40s trio with Nat 'King' Cole and Buddy Rich. With musicians of this caliber, it's no surprise that lvey-Divey sizzles with exuberance-the confidant ... |

The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings, 1961»rank: 847by: Bill Evans
: :Bill Evans, with virtuoso bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian, reinvented the jazz piano trio, creating stunning contrapuntal dialogues that merged luminous lyricism with layers of complex, elusive harmonies, its moments of limpid beauty suddenly giving way to surging rhythms. The trio's finest recorded moments, these performances were captured just 10 days before LaFaro's death in a car accident. The original releases--Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby--are celebrated masterpieces. This three-CD set is a brilliant reissue--almost a ... |

Chase/Ennea/Pure Music»rank: 8610by: Chase
: :Chase was a Jazz-Rock horn band masterminded by trumpet player extraordinaire Bill Chase. The only issued three albums, all of which made the Billboard charts when originally issued in the early 1970s. Tragically this all came to an end when most of the band, including Bill, was killed in a plane crash in 1974. Their music lives on with these three excellent albums, gathered together here as three albums on two CDs. |

The Visit»rank: 1984by: Loreena McKennitt
: essential recording:Mixing a variety of styles with a Celtic base, this was McKennitt's breakthrough album and remains one of her most musically interesting. 'All Souls Night' begins the album, with dance-like rhythms and McKennitt's wonderful voice singing about the Celtic New Year. 0ther features include a musical setting of Tennyson's 'Lady of Shalott', which, while not as sophisticated as Noyes' 'The Highwayman' on The Book of Secrets, is an enchanting listen. There's also an interesting rendition of 'Greensleeves' and the ... |
