Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds, Vol. 1

by: Jill Scott

: 's Best of 2000:Jill Scott's debut, Who ls Jill Scott?, is a luscious portrait of the artist as a grown woman. ln R&B, black femininity has often been reduced to two dimensions: sex and materialism. But Scott lives in 3-D, and it shows in her voluptuous songwriting. She combines a beautiful voice with an extreme generosity of spirit, making her music a dreamy, soulful delight. Lizz Mendez Berry :Jill Scott is the singer-songwriter who wrote the unforgettable hook on the Roots' ...

Hoodoo Man Blues

by: Junior Wells

: essential recording:This 1965 album is where vocalist and harmonica player Junior Wells comes into his own. An early collaboration with Buddy Guy, the two of them sum up the 1960s funk-rock-blues that lay ahead. Hoodoo Man Blues inspired Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton, and a host of other musician-fans. Wells and Guy don't shy from creating James Brown-funkified blues, or from putting a rock edge to their blues; but neither do they shy from traditional blues. Their version of 'Good Morning ...

: :DVD is NTSC format, region code 2 :The fact that Genius Loves Company will be Ray Charles's final new album inspires an unavoidable blue feeling. But it's also a happy reminder that the man spent the last months of his life at work doing what he loved. The overall effect of these dozen duets is autumnal and smooth. Brother Ray is on point and cruising here. Fine moments abound--you can hear his delight even in the rather stiff company of ...

by: Keb' Mo'

: :The velvety voiced Mo' shifts away from his usual matters of the heart to matters of the world on this disc of predominantly covers. He has also abandoned his bluesier roots in favor of a slicker, jazz-based pop. The result is a protest album for the double-latte crowd, most of whom can hum along to chestnuts from the Rascals ('People Got to be Free'), John Lennon ('lmagine'), and Bob Dylan ('The Times They Are A-Changin''). While a jaunty banjo- and fiddle-flecked ...

The Very Best of Robert Palmer

: :16 hits, both his solo smashes and those with the Power Station. 1995 German EMl release. :He could be the most low-key superstar in the entire pop arena. While almost anyone can name two or three Robert Palmer songs off the top of their head, it's startling to see all his monster hits packaged together and to realize just how many there were. Was Robert Palmer really this big and important? Actually, yes. With nineteen songs in this collection, ten ...

by: Mick Hucknall

: :The U.K.’s Mick Hucknall, globally renowned as lead vocalist for Simply Red, brings his world-class, blue-eyed soul front and center for his highly anticipated solo debut album, Tribute To Bobby. The disc was recorded to salute one of Hucknall’s prime inspirations, legendary American blues vocalist Bobby 'Blue' Bland. Described as a 'master class in soul, blues and R&B,' it features Hucknall’s distinctive interpretations of twelve classic songs that were signature hits for Bland. At the same time that Hucknall honors the ...

: :New York guitar phenom walks tall in the blues tradition with this third album, jettisoning fiery riffs inspired by John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, Elmore James, and Albert Collins into the future with furious playing, a hard-rock sensibility, and a grizzled voice that owes a debt to Gregg Allman. Equally inspired by the Delta blues and the mid-'60s British blues boom, the young firebrand--who titled this CD after a Rod Stewart song penned while in the Jeff Beck Group--is able to ...

: :Limited edition Japanese pressing of the remastered 1971 album features 2 CD's with the 21 original tracks packaged in a miniature LP sleeve. Sony. 2005. :This time selected and programmed by the man himself, the two-disc second installment in Dylan's Greatest Hits series comes off as much more idiosyncratic than its brother, famed songs ('Lay Lady Lay,' 'A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall') notwithstanding. An even richer cut-by-cut listen than the earlier best-of, this 1971 set masterfully casts the classics into ...

Beyonce's London fans go crazy when the Destiny's Child beauty, on her first solo international tour, descends to a massive stage while suspended, upside down, from a wire. After a delicate landing, the star embarks on a set of recent hits immersed in complicated arrangements, including the Arabic sound of "Baby Boy" and "Naughty Girl," the chunky, hypnotic funk of "Hip Hop Star," and Beyonce: Live at Wembley's best performance, the powerful "Work It Out," in which the diva is at her clearest, jazziest, and most soulful. Not everything works. The bottom falls out of "Gift from Virgo," "Be with You" is forgettable, and Beyonce's stage patter needs polish. But a Destiny's Child medley accompanied by only a DJ is innovative and fun, "Summertime" proves a breezy dance number, and "Crazy in Love" is bolstered by what sounds like the old Stax horns. A CD featuring a few remixes is included with the DVD. --Tom Keogh
