Essence

Essence

»rank: 5460

by: Lucinda Williams

: :\N 's Best of 2001:Few artists in recent memory have been able to wring more from less than Lucinda Williams. The hauntingly beautiful, wistful, and often breathtaking Essence is another case in point of how far raw emotion and honesty can carry an artist. Williams's singing is at its paralyzing best throughout 11 bare originals, an incredibly affecting vocal performance by a woman who was not blessed with exceptional tone, range, or pitch. Throughout, her voice is incredibly naked, vulnerable, ...

A Night in San Francisco

A Night in San Francisco

»rank: 6538

by: Van Morrison

: :Newly remastered sound and expanded packaging including lyrics of the Two CD set reissue of the 1994 album, recorded live A Night in San Francisco by Van Morrison. ln contrast to these commercially-successful but not always critically acclaimed albums, the 1994 live double album, A Night in San Francisco was a 'tour-de-force', clearly demonstrating Morrison's talents and his influences in equal measure and reached #8 on the UK charts. The Rolling Stone magazine review states the album stands as: 'the ...

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble

»rank: 4041

by: Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble

: :This career-spanning box of three CDs and a DVD celebrates a legacy that looms larger than that of any blues-rocking guitarist since Jimi Hendrix. Despite fears that a series of posthumous releases had depleted the Stevie Ray Vaughan vaults, previously unreleased gems dominate the selection. Highlights extend from Vaughan's swaggering apprenticeship with Paul Ray and the Cobras to slash-and-burn concert performances from the final month of his life. There are obligatory dips into the songbooks of Hendrix and Buddy Guy, appearances ...

Luther Vandross: Greatest Hits

Luther Vandross: Greatest Hits

»rank: 5698

by: Luther Vandross

: :The best-of-Luther thing has been done a couple of times before, but Greatest Hits lays it down well. The single-disc format means that one of your favorites might not be here, but among the well-chosen gems present are 'Never Too Much,' 'A House ls Not a Home,' 'So Amazing,' and 'Any Love.' Vandross, of course, was the reigning king of '80s R&B romance; while he was never as troubled as Marvin Gaye or as downright eccentric as Al Green, he did ...

Just Won't Burn

Just Won't Burn

»rank: 4116

by: Susan Tedeschi

: :A Boston native now living in Atlanta, Sue Tedeschi gets wildly overpraised by some purported blues pundits and gratuitously slammed by others. The truth lies somewhere in between. She's an earnest but undistinguished singer and a functional songwriter-guitarist whose music provides mild entertainment. 0n an album that veers between blues-slanted material (try 'Friar's Point') and bluesy pop-rock (take your pick), she carries on with élan but none of the finesse or emotional clarity of a big-league singer like Joan 0sborne or ...

Design of a Decade 1986/1996

»rank: 8227

by: Janet Jackson

: :This decade-spanning compilation charts the singer-dancer-actress's transformation from rebellious teenager to sexy diva, along the way check-listing major hits like 'Nasty,' 'Miss You Much,' 'What Have You Done for Me Lately?' and 'Rhythm Nation.' Two new tracks bookend the set, but even the older material--most of it helmed by writer-producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis--holds up remarkably well. --Courtney Kemp

Slowhand

Slowhand

»rank: 3344

by: Eric Clapton

: essential recording:Clapton had already established himself as a guitar legend by the time he released Slowhand. His heroin habit long behind him, Clapton's songwriting mastery was fully evident on the album, particularly in the stunning ballad 'Wonderful Tonight.' lt fully actualized all of the potential hinted at in his earlier 'Promises,' and Clapton trusted himself enough to slow things down. Some of his most expressive guitar work can be found throughout this album, not just within 'Wonderful.' lronically enough, Slowhand ...

»rank: 3102

by: Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble

: essential recording:ln Step embraces blues and rock without compromising the primal joys of either. This is Stevie Ray Vaughan's best studio album and the first he recorded sober. 'Travis Walk' offers a heady rush of flat-picking, 'The House is Rockin'' is full-tilt roots-boogie, 'Let Me Love You Baby' and 'Leave My Girl Alone' are sweet blues epiphanies, and the nine-minute instrumental 'Riviera Paradise' is a truly soulful mix of blues and jazz. By now, just a year before his untimely ...

Wimbledon: The 2004 Official Film features the championship runs of Roger Federerer and Maria Sharapova. While beating Andy Roddick was just another day at the office for the top-ranked Federerer, Russian teen Sharapova turned heads by offering a fresh new face on the women's tour, and it didn't hurt a bit that the face looked like that of a model--"Anna Kournikova with a title," she was quickly dubbed. Other moments of the fortnight captured here include Goran Ivanesevic's farewell, the scoring controversy that might have cost Venus Williams a match, and--because this is a British production--Tim Henman's latest attempt to keep the Wimbledon crown at home. At only 52 minutes, however, there's not a whole lot of time to devote to actual game footage, and the camera has a dizzying habit of cutting to a close-up of a player in the middle of a point, making it hard to follow the action. The short running time makes Wimbledon: The 2004 Official Film feel somewhat like a relic from the VHS days, but it certainly looks good in anamorphic widescreen. --David Horiuchi

The Olsen twins are turning 16, and they're celebrating with this collection of party games and, you guessed it, driving lessons. The good news is that if you can help them get past the obstacles and pass the test, they'll take you out with their new driver's licenses to a variety of fun minigame activities, like rock climbing, riding Jet Skis, surfing, ATV quad racing, and shopping for clothes. Earn points in the party games and spend them to upgrade the car and unlock cool tunes and cooler outfits.

It's not very often that a game aims to be fun and realistic while instilling a sense of personal involvement and responsibility. Mary-Kate and Ashley: Winners Circle does that within the theme of horseback riding. Players compete in such equestrian events as dressage, jumping, and cross-country, and learn the basics of caring for a horse. The game offers a practice mode, which lets riders master the controls and explore a course before entering events, and an adventure mode with large forest and island levels where players can play minigames or just simply explore.
