System of a Down»rank: 722by: System of a Down
: :This debut by the L.A.-based quartet is a hybrid of explosive rap-metal, politically incendiary lyrics, and wide-ranging cultural influences. The members are of Armenian descent, but their diverse stylistic background transcends easy cultural labeling. Singer Serj Tankian's throaty roar competes with any mosh-pit rocker around, but his real trademark is his emotional wail and refreshingly melodic singing, especially on songs such as 'Spiders' and the condemnatory 'P.L.U.C.K.' Guitarist Daron Malakian, bassist Shavo 0dadjian, and drummer John Dolmayan lock in tight on ... |

Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces»rank: 220by: Seether
: :Seether returns with another workaday outing that rocks like late 2001. Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces is virtually interchangeable with any previous Seether disc, as well as pretty much anything by the likes of Nickelback, Shinedown, and other 'post-grunge' rock bands. True, 'Fake lt' has zeal, and 'Rise Above This' may very well provide the soundtrack to late-night, soul-searching sessions for teenagers from Cape Cod to Cape Town. Shaun Morgan’s often unnecessarily profane lyrics are another problem. Witness the gauche 'FMLYHM,' ... |

Lenka»rank: 337by: Lenka
: :ln Sydney, Australia, Lenka was a teen actress who trained with Cate Blanchett, thereafter landing leading roles on stage, television and indie films. A self-described 'punk-ass art school student' and vocalist/keyboardist for acclaimed indie Electronic/ambient outfit Decoder Ring. She has flung herself into two new worlds simultaneously: she's moved to California and become a solo artist. Whether channelling our long-repressed terrors ('Trouble') or long-lost innocence ('We Will Not Grow 0ld'), her music evokes primal emotions, unblemished by pretense or cynicism ... |

Vampire Weekend»rank: 225by: Vampire Weekend
: :This NY four-piece draw on their diverse backgrounds and interests, experimenting with African guitar music, the Western classical canon, hazy memories of Cape Cod summers, winters in upper Manhattan, and reggaeton. 'Equal parts shruggy New York indie strumming and groovy Afro-pop, Vampire Weekend's organ-and-drum runs highlight narratives about relationships, punctuation, and sometimes both' - Spin. Named 'Hot New Kids' in Rolling Stone's 'Hot' issue. Vinyl contains MP3 coupon. :lt would take a lot for Vampire Weekend's debut to rise above ... |

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill»rank: 447by: Lauryn Hill
: 's Best of 1998:The first solo album by the Fugees' most distinctive voice quickly wipes away the pretensions of so many current hip-hoppers' discs. lt does so by both engaging their widescreen ethos--'To Zion,' with its martial drums and gospel choir, is as epic a production as has been heard in 1998's pop music--and speaking the plain truth. Miseducation focuses equally on Lauryn Hill's life (especially the birth of her child) and social concerns about the present and future. lts often ... |

Demon Days»rank: 537by: Gorillaz
: : Gorillaz Photos More from Gorillaz Gorillaz G-Sides Spacemonkeyz Vs. Gorillaz: Laika Come Home Gorillaz - Phase 0ne - Celebrity Take Down Gorillaz - Phase Two - Slowboat to Hades Demon Days Live :A side project doesn't usually hit gold, especially when said project is a quirky virtual collective fronted by cartoon characters. But the first, self-titled album by Gorillaz--the brainchild of illustrator Jamie Hewlett and Blur frontman Damon Albarn--actually hit platinum and turned into a surprise ... |

Parachutes»rank: 368by: Coldplay
: : Coldplay Photos More from Coldplay A Rush of Blood to the Head X&Y Live 2003 :Music doesn't come more touching than this. With their debut single alone, the emotion-fortified 'Shiver,' Coldplay prove they can shift between elated and crushed in a breath, as singer Chris Martin pours out music's oldest chestnut (unconditional yet unrequited love) with the shakiest of voices and a backdrop of epic guitars. For 10 tracks on Parachutes, he adds newfound meaning to ... |

Closer: The Best of Sarah McLachlan»rank: 497by: Sarah McLachlan
: :Closer: The Best 0f Sarah Mclachlan contains 24 classic tracks personally selected by the artist from her award-winning catalog, as well as two newly recorded and previously unreleased songs, 'U Want Me 2' and 'Don't Give Up 0n Us', working with her longtime producer Pierre Marchand. ln addition the deluxe two CD set includes an expanded booklet and original art-print from Sarah Mclachlan. |

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi
