Big Bad World»rank: 1416by: Plain White T's
: :There's plenty of heart on Big Bad World. Says singer/songwriter Tom Higgenson, 'We tried to be really ambitious and not worry about people's expectations for this record. 0ur vision was to do it in a classic way.' To that end, the band only used gear or instruments made before 1970: vintage guitars, old Vox amps and Leslie speakers, a Ludwig drum set circa 1966. They even recorded without a click track (equivalent to walking a high-wire without a net). Because ... |

MTV Unplugged in New York»rank: 1236by: Nirvana
: :Japanese only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD - playable on all CD players) pressing. Universal. 2008. essential recording:The last Nirvana collection recorded before the untimely death of Kurt Cobain, Unplugged caught many by surprise with its stripped down, neo-acoustic offerings with a bridled fury. When Cobain sings, 'l swear l don't have a gun, l don't have a gun' with clenched teeth (instead of an open howl) and when the haunting strains of 'About a Girl'--from their earliest LP--chills ... |

Rock of Ages: The Definitive Collection»rank: 1087by: Def Leppard
: :While many of their peers were abandoning '70s metal and arena rock to hop the punk/new wave bandwagon, Def Leppard smartly stripped the earlier era's music of its excesses, bolstered it with energetic, pop-savvy hooks and quickly found itself the vanguard of the UK's new metal revival and one of the '80s most spectacularly successful rock acts. The first disc of this 35-track, two-and-a-half hour double-disc retrospective focuses on the familiar hits of their early MTV, platinum-selling prime, though the inclusion ... |

The Very Best of Daryl Hall & John Oates»rank: 1492by: Hall & Oates
: :Hall and 0ates often enlivened '70s and '80s radio with sharp pop concoctions that drew on a wellspring of R&B influences picked up in their hometown of Philadelphia. They scored frequently enough, in fact, that this 20-track collection--intended to supplement or replace the earlier Rock 'n Soul, Part 1 with post-'83 winners--doesn't capture all their finest moments. (Where, for instance, are 'She's Gone,' recorded for another label but licensed by RCA for Rock 'n' Soul, and the terrific new wave/funk fusion ... |

Hank III Collector's Edition»rank: 1699by: Hank Williams III
: :Limited edition tin with three CD set. Parental Advisory for Explicit Content. As the name indicates, Hank Williams lll is the third in a line of country music royalty, son of Hank Williams Jr. and grandson to the man they simply called Hank. While Hank lll is certainly as much of a hell-raiser as his pop and grandaddy, his style of music owes much more of a debt to the traditional styles of Hank l than the rowdy country-rock of ... |

Where the NBA Dynasty series (the other initial entry is the slightly meatier Los Angeles Lakers: The Complete History) outdoes Ultimate Jordan is in the six playoff games--one for each year--as they were originally broadcast, minus halftime and commercials. Having the nearly complete game (usually running 90-100 minutes, from the TV introductions to post-game interviews) means you can skip straight to John Paxson's clutch basket or what was expected to be the final shot of Jordan's career. Or you can savor each game in its entirety, all the better to appreciate the artistry of Jordan in his three-pointer barrage against Portland or his "flu game" against Utah. You can see other great players too, of course, including Jordan's teammates--Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant, Dennis Rodman--and those opponents unfortunate enough to face the Bulls--Clyde Drexler, Charles Barkley, John Stockton, Karl Malone, and others. Because these are all NBA Finals games, you won't see Jordan's shot over Craig Ehlo or his 63-point coming-out party against Boston, but the 1990s Chicago Bulls were a team for the ages, and merely having their games--some of them all-time classics--available for home viewing is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi

While last-minute heroics tend to be the standard by which we define excellence, there are many other moments that have left an indelible impression, many of them highlighted here. The video clips fall into 10 categories: Dunks, Alley-oops, Assists, Steals, Blocks, Teamwork, the Clutch Shot, Moves, Hustle, and Buzzer-Beaters. At the beginning of each section is a brief introduction. Before showing the top 10 dunks of all time, for example, we learn about the evolution of the dunk--from the first slam to the man who could fly, Michael Jordan--and we hear background commentary from NBA legends such as Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Dr. J, and Bill Russell. This video recalls familiar moments of NBA lore that you will want to own for countless repeat viewings. --Jeremy Storey
