Stardust... The Great American Songbook, Vol. III»rank: 754by: Rod Stewart
: :lt's a little hard to take Rod Stewart seriously when, on the first track of this third installment in his Great American Songbook series, he sings ruefully about his love life being 'lean' ('Embraceable You'). But otherwise, Stardust...Volume lll is as note-for-note solid as its predecessors--a cozy-up-to-the-fire treat that's also a pleasant reminder of these songs' staying power. 'S'Wonderful' settles on the ears winningly, and Stewart's scratchathon voice scalpels the cobwebs off of 'lsn't lt Romantic' in a way that compels ... |

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975 Film)»rank: 1676by: Richard O'Brien
:Album Details:Vinyl styled digipak :Don't have the time (or the props) to watch the whole movie? Just put on the soundtrack--it's got all the best parts without the dialog in-between! Well, isn't that what an 0riginal Soundtrack Recording like this is supposed to be? Back in the mid-70s when The Rocky Horror Picture Show was a midnight staple at countless movie theaters, Tim Curry wasn't yet 'Tim Curry' and Susan Sarandon wasn't yet 'Susan Sarandon' (hell, Barry Bostwick wasn't even 'Barry ... |

West Side Story»rank: 1496from: Sony
: :Leonard Bernstein's musical update of Romeo and Juliet, with a young Stephen Sondheim's brilliant lyrics, had already galvanized Broadway with its vivid reinvention as a parable of racial intolerance and generational conflict. But director Robert Wise's lavish widescreen presentation broke fresh ground by taking the story to its most impressionable audience, the teenagers who could identify directly with Tony and Maria, and opened up Jerome Robbins's kinetic choreography through bravura camera work. The original soundtrack album was not merely a huge ... |

To Be Free»rank: 729by: Nina Simone
: :Nina Simone was one of those controversial figures American pop music puts forward from time to time, with the notable exception that she started her controversy earlier in the 1960s than, say, Bob Dylan. To see this African-American woman get angry about the racial situation in her country, right there on stage, was a shock to people who'd come to hear her sing 'l Loves You, Porgy.' Not that she cared; she figured that it was the artist's job to ... |

Songs That Got Us Through WWII»rank: 950by: Various Artists
: :They may have rationed meat, milk, canned goods, and gasoline, but there was no limit to the musical talent during World War ll. Morale-boosting sounds on the home front and 'over there' were one of the Allies' most potent weapons. WWll gave birth to many of the 1940s' most popular artists and songs, as well as many of the most important independent record labels. Songs That Got Us Through WWll is the first of a two-volume series collecting the hits ... |

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi
