Creedence Clearwater Revival

Creedence Clearwater Revival

»rank: 1765

by: Creedence Clearwater Revival

: :Popular but not hip, basic but not shallow, rooted but not retro, Creedence Clearwater Revival distinguished themselves in the late 1960s and early 1970s through these contradictions. This six-disc set is the definitive Creedence collection, offering superbly remastered versions of all of their studio and live albums and adding a disc's worth of pre-Creedence material. Live at Blues Alley

Live at Blues Alley

»rank: 1000

by: Eva Cassidy

: :Recorded live at Blues Alley, Washington, D.C., Jan. 2, 1996, where the late folk singer/songwriter had a loyal following. 13 tracks, including four that appeared on her breakthrough 1998 album, 'Songbird'. Blix Street. :When Eva Cassidy is swinging her way through 'Cheek to Cheek' and getting down and bluesy on 'Stormy Monday' on this live set from 1996, it's nigh impossible not to get swept up in her voice's vast, barreling force. Her full range, though, becomes most obvious--and soul-shaking--on ...

Christmas Island

Christmas Island

»rank: 422

by: Jimmy Buffett

: :lt never snows in the Florida Keys, but as every Parrothead knows, Jimmy Buffett was born on Christmas Day 1946. His Caribbean folk tunes have always had a festive air to them, and his Coral Reefer Band tackle these holiday songs in their usual laidback style. Buffett turns out both traditional carols ('Jingle Bells' with a few tropical ad-libs) and his own myth-building originals ('A Sailor's Christmas,' 'Merry Christmas, Alabama'). This may not be the traditional Christmas fare of chestnuts roasting ...

Tracy Chapman

Tracy Chapman

»rank: 1615

by: Tracy Chapman

: :0ne of the most striking debut albums ever released, this disc instantly established Chapman as a musical force, and with good reason. lmmediacy, integrity of purpose, and unqualified artistry are apparent in nearly every song. And while 'Fast Cars' remains Chapman's best-known work, 'Talkin' Bout a Revolution' is that rarest breed: a song which is both topical and timeless. Any exploration into Chapman's work should begin with this at times stunning effort; it's a disc of remarkable uniformity and clarity that ...

The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan

The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan

»rank: 882

by: Bob Dylan

: :Dylan's outstanding second album is a tremendous jump from its predecessor. Whereas the debut established him as a peerless interpreter of folk and country-blues classics, and a singer like none before, this followup features some of the most pungent original songs of the '60s. 'Blowin' in the Wind,' 'Masters of War,' 'A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall,' 'Don't Think Twice, lt's All Right,' 'l Shall Be Free': if this sounds like the lineup for a greatest-hits collection, you've got the idea. Nat ...

Beyonce's London fans go crazy when the Destiny's Child beauty, on her first solo international tour, descends to a massive stage while suspended, upside down, from a wire. After a delicate landing, the star embarks on a set of recent hits immersed in complicated arrangements, including the Arabic sound of "Baby Boy" and "Naughty Girl," the chunky, hypnotic funk of "Hip Hop Star," and Beyonce: Live at Wembley's best performance, the powerful "Work It Out," in which the diva is at her clearest, jazziest, and most soulful. Not everything works. The bottom falls out of "Gift from Virgo," "Be with You" is forgettable, and Beyonce's stage patter needs polish. But a Destiny's Child medley accompanied by only a DJ is innovative and fun, "Summertime" proves a breezy dance number, and "Crazy in Love" is bolstered by what sounds like the old Stax horns. A CD featuring a few remixes is included with the DVD. --Tom Keogh
