The Beatles (The White Album)

»rank: 98

by: The Beatles

: essential recording:Better known as the 'White Album,' this was meant to be the record that brought them back to earth after three years of studio experimentation. lnstead, it took them all over the place, continuing to burst the envelope of pop music. Lennon and McCartney were still at the height of their powers, with Lennon in particular growing into one of rock's towering figures. But even McCartney could still rock, and the amazement on 'Helter Skelter' was that he had ...

: :0ne of the most famous and influential albums ever recorded, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band had a huge impact on the music world, signaling the beginning of a new era of sophistication and maturity in rock. The musical experimentation was dynamic and fresh, several tracks were edited to create seamless transitions, and even the visual design was more elaborate than anything previously attempted. Producer George Martin and The Beatles searched for new sounds and studio effects. They added crowd ...

Abbey Road

by: The Beatles

: essential recording:The Beatles' last days as a band were as productive as any major pop phenomenon that was about to split. After recording the ragged-but-right Let lt Be, the group held on for this ambitious effort, an album that was to become their best-selling. Though all four contribute to the first side's writing, John Lennon's hard-rocking, 'Come Together' and 'l Want You (She's So Heavy)' make the strongest impression. A series of song fragments edited together in suite form dominates ...

: :Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. 2008. essential recording:Dark Side of the Moon, originally released in 1973, is one of those albums that is discovered anew by each generation of rock listeners. The sound effects on songs like '0n the Run,' ...

The Wall (Deluxe Packaging Digitally Remastered)

»rank: 305

by: Pink Floyd

: Essential Recording:The Wall is less a collection of songs than a single work, which is sometimes frustrating; the plot lacks enough coherence to hold the snippets of music together. However, there are occasional flashes of brilliance on what ranks as Pink Floyd's most ambitious project. Most of these come from the fully developed songs, which have become classics in their own right. 'Hey You,' 'Mother,' and especially 'Comfortably Numb' are subtle, incredible pieces of music. Though complex, they move at ...

Beyonce's London fans go crazy when the Destiny's Child beauty, on her first solo international tour, descends to a massive stage while suspended, upside down, from a wire. After a delicate landing, the star embarks on a set of recent hits immersed in complicated arrangements, including the Arabic sound of "Baby Boy" and "Naughty Girl," the chunky, hypnotic funk of "Hip Hop Star," and Beyonce: Live at Wembley's best performance, the powerful "Work It Out," in which the diva is at her clearest, jazziest, and most soulful. Not everything works. The bottom falls out of "Gift from Virgo," "Be with You" is forgettable, and Beyonce's stage patter needs polish. But a Destiny's Child medley accompanied by only a DJ is innovative and fun, "Summertime" proves a breezy dance number, and "Crazy in Love" is bolstered by what sounds like the old Stax horns. A CD featuring a few remixes is included with the DVD. --Tom Keogh
