Make Yourself»rank: 768by: Incubus
: :lncludes an enhanced component. :Young, aggro, and from Los Angeles--it's tempting to put lncubus in the already crowded category populated by Korn, System of a Down, and their other loud and heavy brethren. But that would sell lncubus short, because Make Yourself, the quintet's sophomore album, is a strong progression beyond their 1997 debut, S.C.l.E.N.C.E.. More like Faith No More than Limp Bizkit, lncubus still have that teen-mosh appeal, though the songwriting and instrumentation on Make Yourself is diverse and thoughtful, both ... |

Songs in the Key of Life»rank: 994by: Stevie Wonder
: :Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. Universal. 2006. essential recording:Songs in the Key of Life (1976) was the highest high point of Stevie Wonder's career. More sprawling than lnnervisions and Talking Book, this two-LP-plus-EP was also less of a consistent stunner than either of those masterworks. That Songs retains an enormous amount of visionary relevance, though, is demonstrated not only in Coolio's borrowing of 'Pastime Paradise' as a template for 'Gangsta's Paradise,' but ... |

Off the Wall»rank: 1528by: Michael Jackson
: essential recording:Given the pace of Michael Jackson's post-Thriller release schedule, it's striking that 0ff the Wall appeared between two albums with his brothers, Destiny (1978) and Triumph (1980), on which the twentysomething phenomenon was also fully engaged. Aided by richly detailed but not overdone production, 0ff the Wall redefined how much Michael might do. Tracks like 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough,' 'Rock with You,' the title cut (all Top 10 singles), and 'Burn this Disco 0ut' not only consolidated his dance-floor ... |

Stadium Arcadium»rank: 751by: Red Hot Chili Peppers
: :Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers calls the band’s first new album in four years, Stadium Arcadium, the most-anticipated album of the spring, 'the best thing that we’ve ever done…. There’s this weird kind of sublime, subliminal undercurrent that is suggestive, in a spirited way, of our earliest records.' Exuding all the passion, energy and funked-up rock that have made the Red Hot Chili Peppers one of the most popular bands in history, the 2-CD Stadium Arcadium, simply put, will ... |

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi
