Microcastle»rank: 655by: Deerhunter
: :Here it is, the highly anticipated follow-up to 2007's Cryptograms album which launched the band into the stratosphere of hype. Whether or not that was or is deserved is entirely subjective. Microcastle was recorded over the course of a week at Rare Book Studios in Brooklyn, New York with Nicolas Verhes in April of this year. The album was recorded as a four-piece consisting of Bradford Cox, Lockett Pundt, Joshua Fauver, and Moses Archuleta. 'Saved by 0ld Times' features a vocal collage ... |

Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust»rank: 416by: Sigur Ros
: :lnspired by the unfettered feeling of the acoustic performances filmed during Heima, Sigur Rósadopted a looser approach in creating their fifth album Med Sud l Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust. The album consequently is fresher and more human than anything they ve previouslyrecorded.Rough edges, cracked notes, and the sound of fingers on strings are audible resulting in tracks(e.g. Íllgresi ) that prove to be the band's sparsest and most affecting work to date. Worry notthough, plenty of electric guitar can be heard throughout the ... |

Carried to Dust»rank: 704by: Calexico
: :There's always been intrigue and adventure at the heart of Calexico. Joey Burns and John Convertino have constantly imbued their music with an unparalleled sense of drama, calling upon the myths and iconography of the American West and its Spanish speaking neighbor Mexico. 'Carried To Dust' represents the pinnacle of their achievement, a thrilling and moving journey through a landscape that draws upon the modern world as much as it does the decayed reminders of times past, stumbling upon unexpected delights whilst ... |

: :'A fusion of Tigerbeat6's pop destruction and 2ManyDJs' mainstream mash-ups.' -URB 'Girl Talk...accelerates beats, distorts textures, pitches up flow, and sets up strange juxtapositions to render absurd the sexed-up aura of hip-hop and dance pop.' - CLEVELAND SCENE 'ln a time when kids can barely sit through an entire album by just one artist, this A.D.D. mix will keep them sedated and/or spastic.' - XLR8R Girl Talk (a.k.a. Takk...»rank: 1949by: Sigur Rós
: :Just when this lcelandic crew seemed stuck in loud/soft/loud/ soft rut a la Mogwai or Godspeed You Black Emperor, they release their most beguiling, subtle and beautiful album yet. This album, allegedly the group's first sung in lcelandic rather than their own made-up 'Hopelandic' (not that this listener could tell the difference) is relentlessly joyous, unaffectedly rad and inventive but never just for its own sake. Strings hold an ever more prominent place in the music, and this is a good thing. Songs ... |

Daydream Nation»rank: 4653by: Sonic Youth
: essential recording:The essential New York rock band of the post-punk era, Sonic Youth care as much about the quasi-symphonic, microtonal art-guitar music of composers like Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca as they do about the rock-song form, and with Daydream Nation, they struck their greatest balance between the two. The songs hover gorgeously for extended lengths, letting guitarists Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo intertwine fragile tonalities as carefully as it's possible to do at wall-shaking volume, while Moore and bassist Kim Gordon's ... |

In Ear Park»rank: 1877by: Department of Eagles
: :ln Ear Park is a colorful and expansive album, an intimate and personal collection of songs; much of the material that Daniel brought to ln Ear Park draws on memories from his childhood, especially those relating to his father, who passed away in 2007 and to whom the album is dedicated (the title track is a nickname for a park in Los Angeles that the two used to visit). Many of Fred's contributions relate to similar themes of nostalgia and mortality, giving ... |

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi
