Thanksgiving: A Windham Hill Collection

Thanksgiving: A Windham Hill Collection

»rank: 9324

by: Various Artists

: :Thanksgiving generally is a pleasant and likeable affair. lts features include a charming, gently propulsive take on the traditional piece 'Allelujah' by Celtic harpist Lisa Lynne; a delicate rendering of 'Amazing Grace' by John Doan on a 20-string harp guitar; and a church-ready version of 'We Gather Together' by a trio of Paul McCandless (oboe), Philip Aaberg (piano), and Michael Manring (bass). A midalbum three-song stretch, though--from the heavy stringing (cello, violin, guitar) of William Coulter and Barry Phillips to R. Carlos Nakai's ...

A Winter's Solstice II

»rank: 1044

by: Various Artists

: :The Winter Solstice series from Windham Hill is an appealing souvenir from the label's early days, when guitarist Will Ackerman still served as its chief guiding light and fount of original thought. For years Ackerman shunned the overt commercial trappings of traditional Christmas recordings and instead offered odes to a broader season that, like his artists' music, is compatible with periods of sustained, hushed contemplation. Winter Solstice ll, released in 1988, mixes original and traditional compositions (none that specifically brings Christmas to mind) ...

A Winter's Solstice: Silver Anniversary Edition

»rank: 1563

: :Since the Windham Hill imprint's Winter Solstice series was born in 1985, the concept has gone through some changes, bottoming out with 1999's abysmally kitschy Winter Solstice on lce. With this Silver Anniversary Edition, Dawn Atkinson, who produced the first Winter Solstice disc, has gone back to her original concept of nontraditional seasonal music and novel arrangements of Christmas classics. She's also brought in some old standbys, soliciting works from Paul McCandless, Barbara Higbie, Will Ackerman, Philip Aaberg, and Liz Story. Much of ...

: :ln 1993, Windham Hill Records released its fourth album of seasonal music recorded by the label's artists and unavailable in any other collection. 0nly a few of the tracks on A Winter's Solstice lV lend credence to the label's unfair stereotype as the home for new age background music. A Quiet Revolution: 30 Years of Windham Hill

»rank: 8496

by: Various Artists

: :ln the 48-page booklet that accompanies the handsome, hardbound packaging of A Quiet Revolution, long-time producer Dawn Atkinson succinctly defines Windham Hill's core sound as 'acoustically rooted music that is a blend of folk, classical and jazz influences.' Guitarist Will Ackerman, who launched the label in 1976 with a tiny pressing of solo works, boils its essence down to a single word, adding 'it's a word seldom associated with the music industry: innocence.' Windham Hill rocked the music trade in the late 1970s ...

: :New Age music, ambient electronica, and spiritualized hip-hop received their first major, K-Tel-like treatment in 1996 when Virgin Records assembled Pure Moods. The 'As Seen on TV' compilation quickly became a hot seller, and it would be nice to think that its popularity has as much to do with the music as the marketing. To be sure, Pure Moods offers genre hits aplenty: from Enya's '0rinoco Flow' to 'Sadness' from Enigma; from a dance mix of the 'X-Files Theme' to edits of vintage ...

Touch-Windham Hill 25 Years of Guitar

Touch-Windham Hill 25 Years of Guitar

»rank: 4665

by: Various Artists

: :Windham Hill initially gained a sterling reputation through exquisitely recorded and played instrumental guitar albums. The label now commemorates 25 years of recording by picking the cream of its crop. A great harvest it is, too! Founder Will Ackerman rerecords the early 'The lmpeding Death of the Virgin Spirit.' Then there's Alex De Grassi's gentle pyrotechnics and Doyle Dykes's jazzy inflections. Together, they've truly expanded the boundaries of acoustic-guitar playing--an effort that may have reached its zenith with the late Michael Hedges. His ...

The Best of Narada Christmas

»rank: 6837

by: Various Artists

: :A superb two-disc set of Narada's finest recording artists, from David Arkenstone and Eric Tingstad and Nancy Rumbel to Nando Lauria and Dordán. Narada has assembled a wide assortment of musical glad tidings that encompass New Age-like pop arrangements with larger ensembles, Celtic interpretations, jazzy and neoclassical pieces, and a host of acoustic readings, the least of which is Billy McLaughlin's 'What Child ls This?' Whether you like straight-ahead arrangements like Arkenstone's playful and more produced 'l Saw Three Ships,' or improvised pieces ...

Wimbledon: The 2004 Official Film features the championship runs of Roger Federerer and Maria Sharapova. While beating Andy Roddick was just another day at the office for the top-ranked Federerer, Russian teen Sharapova turned heads by offering a fresh new face on the women's tour, and it didn't hurt a bit that the face looked like that of a model--"Anna Kournikova with a title," she was quickly dubbed. Other moments of the fortnight captured here include Goran Ivanesevic's farewell, the scoring controversy that might have cost Venus Williams a match, and--because this is a British production--Tim Henman's latest attempt to keep the Wimbledon crown at home. At only 52 minutes, however, there's not a whole lot of time to devote to actual game footage, and the camera has a dizzying habit of cutting to a close-up of a player in the middle of a point, making it hard to follow the action. The short running time makes Wimbledon: The 2004 Official Film feel somewhat like a relic from the VHS days, but it certainly looks good in anamorphic widescreen. --David Horiuchi

The Olsen twins are turning 16, and they're celebrating with this collection of party games and, you guessed it, driving lessons. The good news is that if you can help them get past the obstacles and pass the test, they'll take you out with their new driver's licenses to a variety of fun minigame activities, like rock climbing, riding Jet Skis, surfing, ATV quad racing, and shopping for clothes. Earn points in the party games and spend them to upgrade the car and unlock cool tunes and cooler outfits.

It's not very often that a game aims to be fun and realistic while instilling a sense of personal involvement and responsibility. Mary-Kate and Ashley: Winners Circle does that within the theme of horseback riding. Players compete in such equestrian events as dressage, jumping, and cross-country, and learn the basics of caring for a horse. The game offers a practice mode, which lets riders master the controls and explore a course before entering events, and an adventure mode with large forest and island levels where players can play minigames or just simply explore.
